Guide to Copenhagen: Ølbaren Elmegade

At one of my favorite streets in Copenhagen, the very short street Elmegade at Nørrebro, there’s a bar called Ølbaren (it means ”Beer bar” – nice name, right?). If you want to find a place to sit here, you better come early. Ølbaren is both popular and quite small, so if you arrive late in the evening, it can be hard to get a place. In the summer, there are some extra chairs out at the sidewalk, but they usually get taken quite fast as well.

Anyway. Don’t let the fact that it’s tiny and crowded stop you from coming here, because this is actually one of my favorite bars in Copenhagen. I don’t know any other place where you can get so many different beers and so good service. No matter how many people that are waiting behind you, they take their time and try to find you something good.

I have several friends that come here quite often, and one of the reasons’ that they keep coming back, despite the good atmosphere, is that the menu with new beers change quite often. Obviously there are some beers you can get all the time, but if you want to try new things, there are always a few new options at the menu at the wall. I usually order a “girly beer” – last time I got a beer that tasted as a combination between lemonade and beer. My company for that evening ended up with an almost black beer that was way too strong for me, so here is definitely something for every person.
